The spinning wheel you found in the tower belonged to Arachne, the great weaver. In ancient times long past, the poor girl's bottom half was turned into that of a spider to punish her for her conceit.
Arachne later had a change of heart, and lived quietly in a remote area, making beautiful carpets from her own silken thread. Despite her newfound humility, the beauty and magic of her carpets only angered the gods even further.
